Next round of presidential talks on Garabagh due in weeks
Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh
Sarkisian have agreed to hold their next round of talks over the
Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict in the coming weeks, the OSCE
mediators brokering the peace process have announced.
The co-chairs - Yury Merzlyakov of Russia, Bernard Fassier of France and Robert Bradtke of the United States – said in a statement last week that both presidents had reiterated their commitment "to continue their discussions with the objective to make further progress toward reaching an agreement on the basic principles for the peaceful settlement of the Garabagh conflict."
"They accepted the proposal of the co-chairs to organize their next bilateral meeting, the sixth such meeting this year, before the end of November at a time and place to be confirmed."
The mediators visited Azerbaijan and Armenia November 4-6 to arrange the next meeting of the two countries’ leaders. The co-chairs met with President Aliyev in Baku last Thursday. Further, on Friday, they visited the Armenian capital Yerevan where they had talks with President Serzh Sarkisian and then returned to the Azerbaijani capital for another meeting with President Aliyev.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus republics reared up in the late 1980s due to Armenia's territorial claims. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory since the early 1990s in defiance of international law. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but efforts by the international mediators have been fruitless so far. *
