Two more swine flu cases in Azerbaijan
Two more people were diagnosed with the A/H1N1 virus (swine flu)
in Azerbaijan on Thursday, bringing the number of infected persons
in the country to three, according to the Health Ministry.
According to Viktor Gasymov, a department head at the ministry, one
of these people is a middle-aged woman. The woman is a relative of
the person who returned to Azerbaijan from Ukraine by train a while
ago and was diagnosed with the A/H1N1 strain on Wednesday.
The other virus carrier is a 30-year-old man. He has also returned
from Ukraine in the past few days.
The female patient who was previously diagnosed with the disease is
a 40-year-old resident of the Kurdamir district and had temporarily
lived in Ukraine’s Ivanovo-Frankovsk province. She came back to
Azerbaijan in late October.
All the three patients are being treated at the Institute of Lung
Diseases in Baku.
Concerns over the threat of swine flu mounted in Azerbaijan in July
when two persons - residents of Baku and the northwestern city of
Ganja – contracted the virus while in France and Britain. The two
were subsequently treated and discharged from hospital.
Swine flu, which began to spread rapidly this spring, has killed
5,000 people around the world so far, and about 415,000 people are
infected with the strain, according to the World Health
Organization.
Ukraine’s health officials announced an epidemic of swine flu on
October 30. Azerbaijan will send 20 tons of aid to Ukraine on
Friday to help fight the deadly virus, which has already claimed 81
lives in the country. The assistance includes medicine, protective
masks and other basic items needed to counter the H1N1 strain.*
