Azeri clerical body rubbishes ‘ban on calls to prayer’
Azerbaijan’s senior clerical body has dismissed as baseless the allegations on banning calls to Muslim prayer in local mosques.
"Any talk about this is out of the question," Rahima Dadashova, the spokeswoman for the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO) said, adding that no official decision had been passed to that end.
Reports have circulated that calls to prayer were allegedly made quieter since November 1 in several mosques in the capital Baku and the northwestern city of Ganja and were even discontinued in some shrines.
Gunduz Ismayilov, a department head at the State Committee on Work with Religious Associations, noted that it was merely recommended that calls to prayer be sounded rather quietly in the mosques located close to hospitals, kindergartens and educational institutions. He added that following the suggestion in some locations is being deliberately blown out of proportion to use this against the State Committee.*
