Armenian woman detained in Baku over fraud
An Armenian woman engaged in embezzlement has been detained in
Baku. The woman appropriated large quantities of money by deceiving
citizens with promises to assist them in buying property.
According to police officials, Lidiya Balasanova changed her name when she took on her husband’s last name and was granted an ID card as Leyla Isgandarova. She previously served eight years in prison for engaging in fraud together with her husband, Azad Isgandarov, an Azerbaijani national.
Six people who suffered from Balasanova’s actions have been identified so far. Though she admitted to having received 50,000 manats ($62,500) from them, the actual amount has turned out to be as much as 120,000-130,000 manats (up to $162,500).
According to those affected, Balasanova introduced herself as an executive of an oil company. In an effort to convince them, Balasanova claimed she negotiated with the former Chairman of the State Real Estate Register Service Arif Garashov and the Mayor of Baku Hajibala Abutalibov.
Investigators have also established that Balasanova had committed the offense together with her son.*
