Garabagh mediators to visit the region next week
The co-chairmen of the OSCE Minsk Group brokering settlement to the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict will visit Azerbaijan and Armenia in early November, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told the press Thursday.
Mammadyarov said the mediators’ visit aims to follow up on their recent meetings in Luxembourg with the two countries’ foreign ministers. According to him, those discussions focused on ways of deepening the co-chairs’ involvement in Garabagh settlement.
The minister noted that talks on basic principles of the conlfict resolution will be continued during the intermediaries’ visit.
Mammadyarov emphasized that whether or not he will meet his Armenian counterpart on the sidelines of an OSCE ministerial due in Athens on December 1-2 depends on the outcomes of the co-chairs’ visit.
The Azerbaijani foreign minister met with the co-chairs in Luxembourg on Monday. The co-chairs also met with Armenian Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but over a decade of efforts by the US, Russian and French Minsk Group co-chairs have been largely fruitless so far.*
