Azeri company to build regional railway's Georgian section

An Azerbaijani company will build the Georgian section of the
Baku-Tbilisi-Akhalkalaki-Gars railway, an over $420 million line
that will link Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey and create the
shortest route to transport cargo between Europe and Asia, the
transport ministry official said.
The Azerinshaat Service company has won an international tender for the construction of the 30km section of the Kartsakhi-Akhalkalaki railway, Sadraddin Mammadov told reporters.
Although Georgian and Turkish companies participated in the tender as well, preference was given to the Azerbaijani firm. Under the tender terms, an agreement will be signed with Azerinshaat Service within 30 days after the company establishes infrastructure in the area and launches construction of a 1.2km-long tunnel and a railway station in Kartsakhi.
The company is required to complete construction operations by October 1, 2009.
1.5 million passengers and 3 million tons of cargo will be transported by the regional railway in 2010, with the figures to reach 3.5 million passengers and 16.5 million tons by 2034.
