Baku protests at Kiev over destruction of WWI monument
The Azerbaijani government has issued a protest to
Ukraine over the destruction by vandals of a memorial complex
honoring Azerbaijanis who fell in battles seeking to liberate the
city of Sevastopol from the Nazis, according to Rahim Humbatov,
chairman of the Crimea regional organization of the Azerbaijanis
Congress of Ukraine.
The embassy of Azerbaijan in Ukraine forwarded a protest note to the country`s Foreign Ministry expressing concern over the act of vandalism, requesting to urgently detain and prosecute the outlaws and restore the monument to the WWI victims.
The memorial, which eternalizes Azerbaijani fighters against fascism, was erected in the 1970s. However, it was destroyed by unknown individuals early last week.
The police in Sevastopol arrested two suspects - a local resident and a resident of another region - last Wednesday, said Renat Mayboroda, the spokesman for the local department of Ukraine`s Interior Ministry.
Further, Ukrainian authorities have pledged to restore the vandalized monument.
``The Ukrainian people and representatives of official and public circles in the country were indignant at the disrespect to the memorial complex built in the Soviet times in honor of the 77th Azerbaijani Division, which fought heroically during World War II in the city of Sevastopol,`` Ukrainian Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Boris Klimchuk, said.
Sevastopol authorities have decided to rebuild the memorial complex, which will cost around $20,000-25,000. The Ukrainian ambassador decided to allocate $1,000 from the Native Volhynia Foundation, which was founded by him, to the city authorities for the rebuilding.
``We lost 8 million people in World War II and we know the cost of war,`` Klimchuk said.
Ukraine considers as its moral obligation to establish justice in this matter in a short period of time, the ambassador added.
