Group jailed over plot to attack US, Israeli embassies
A group of Lebanese and Azerbaijani citizens charged
with plotting terror acts in Azerbaijan -- including attacks on
Western countries` embassies and having conspired with Al-Qaeda,
Hezbollah and Iranian security service Sepah, were handed down jail
terms in a Baku court on Monday.
Two nationals of Lebanon were sentenced to 15 years in jail, while four citizens of Azerbaijan received 12 to 14 year prison terms during the closed-door proceedings.
According to the indictment, the militant Islamists had decided to take up arms to carry out Jihad in an effort to influence the policies of Israel as well as the United States and other Western countries. They devised a plan seeking to attack the Israeli embassy in Baku simultaneously from various directions, using the weapons and ammunition at their disposal. For this purpose, the group rented an apartment located in front of the embassy compound. They also sought to detonate explosions at the US embassy and the Gabala radar station, the mammoth Soviet-era facility leased by Russia in western Azerbaijan. However, the group was apprehended by law enforcement officers.
