First lady gets Poland`s top award
Mehriban Aliyeva, Azerbaijani First Lady and
President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, has received Poland`s
top award for her contribution to the development of relations
between the two countries.
The award, 2nd class Commander`s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, was presented on Monday by Krzysztof Krajewski, Polish ambassador in Baku, on behalf of President Lech Kaczynski.
``The large-scale projects in the scientific, educational, health and social areas implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation have drawn the attention of the world community,`` Krajewski said, pointing to Aliyeva`s efforts as the head of the foundation as a good example to follow.
Aliyeva said in her remarks that Azerbaijan and Poland have maintained friendly ties for decades.
``These relations have developed further during the years of Azerbaijan`s independence [after 1991]. The Azerbaijani and Polish people resemble two friends.``
The first lady emphasized that Baku and Warsaw have implemented a number of successful projects, adding that new initiatives aiming to further strengthen friendship between the two countries will continue to be undertaken.
The Order of Merit was created in 1974 and is a traditional ``diplomatic order.`` It is granted to foreigners or Poles residing abroad who have made an outstanding contribution to the Polish nation.
