Tel-Aviv wants Baku to broker its ties with Islamic states
The newly-appointed Israeli ambassador to Azerbaijan has said Tel-Aviv would welcome Baku`s initiative to broker an improvement in his country`s strained relations with Islamic states.
Michael Lavon-Lotem said in an interview with the Baku-based ANS TV channel that Israel-Azerbaijan relations represent an example for Tel-Aviv`s ties with other Muslim nations.
``At times, personalities play a more important role than countries in forging ties. We have repeatedly seen that. Particularly in the settlement of the Middle East conflict, it was often certain persons among officials, not states, that sincerely endeavored to mediate. Azerbaijan has a charismatic leader. Naturally, there might be an opportunity to avail of his skills in solving this problem.``
Israel is facing tension with Islamic states, in particular, with Syria and Iran. Turkey once attempted to broker a normalization between Syria and Israel, but the differences remain outstanding.
