Nardaran residents claim rights abuses by former US envoy
Residents of Nardaran, a stronghold of Islamic tradition located about 40 km north of Baku, will protest on September 4 the alleged rights violations by the former US ambassador, Stanley Escudero, according to the head of the protesters` organizing committee.
Rasim Alizada noted that a group of Nardaran residents and Escudero, who is doing business in Azerbaijan, are facing a dispute over land. The case has been heard in court and the ruling was handed down in favor of the former ambassador. Then the residents launched protests, claiming the ruling is unfair.
Alizada also said the protesters had no intent to politicize the issue, given that it was strictly a social problem.
Further, he said considering that efforts by Nardaran residents, whose rights have been violated, have been to no avail so far, they now plan to picket outside the US embassy in Baku, with the date of the protest to be announced at a news conference on September 11.
Mehdi Huseynguliyev, a spokesman for the embassy, has told AssA-Irada: "Mr. Stanley Escudero is a regular US citizen. He is not a government official. Therefore, if there are any queries, they should be addressed to Mr. Escudero."
