Kazakh president due in Baku late Sept.
Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev is scheduled
to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan from September 30 to October
1, according to the country`s ambassador in Baku, Serik
Primbetov.
Primbetov told a news conference Friday that the intergovernmental commission will meet beforehand to develop a package of documents for signing during the visit. Work is underway on six or seven draft agreements covering cooperation in a variety of fields, including transportation, navigation, industry and energy, agriculture, veterinary services and science.
Further, the ambassador said Kazakh-Azeri trade revenues have dwindled due to the downturn caused by the world economic crisis.
"Unfortunately, the crisis has affected Kazakhstan as well. We are not satisfied with the trade transactions carried out with Azerbaijan in the past period of 2009. The two countries saw $450 million in trade during the same period last year. This year, however, the figure is considerably lower."
Primbetov said one of the reasons for the decreasing commodities turnover was Azerbaijan`s halting grain imports from the Central Asian state. The South Caucasus republic has fully met its domestic demand for grain by increasing planted areas.
Primbetov noted that talks between Azerbaijan`s state oil company SOCAR and Kazakhstan`s KazMunaiGas on transporting Kazakh oil to European markets were proceeding successfully. "During the first stage of the project, about 23 million tons a year are to be transported through Azerbaijan`s territory," he announced.
Primbetov said that the creation of a trans-Caspian system is also planned consisting of oil-pouring terminals on the Kazakh coast of the Caspian Sea, tankers and vessels, terminals for storing oil on the Azeri coast and structures linking the area to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) main export pipeline, which transports Azerbaijan`s crude to world markets through Georgia and Turkey.
