Sustainable development is the effective usage of existing resources by the current generation, and their transfer to future generations, Head of Azerbaijan’s State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs Hijran Huseynova said.

She made the remarks Oct. 26 as part of the session “Interactive discussion on the role of youth, women, parliament, civil society and other stakeholders on the way of the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals” during the Baku Forum on Sustainable Development held within the VI Baku International Humanitarian Forum.

Huseynova noted that in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), all countries have made commitments.

She added that steps were taken in Azerbaijan to increase institutional efficiency and provide the population with quality services.

“At the same time, various programs are being implemented to improve the quality of services in the areas of employment and social security of the population,” she said. “Gender issues play an important role in achieving the sustainable development goals. The participation of all stakeholders is very important here. A strong legal framework has been created in Azerbaijan. All this contributed to increasing the role of women in the cultural, social and political life of Azerbaijan and has created ample opportunities to protect the rights of women in all spheres.”

She reminded that Armenia continues its occupation policy against Azerbaijan, adding that 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s lands are under Armenian occupation, and there are more than one million refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan.

Huseynova stressed that the Azerbaijani state is taking all the necessary steps to improve their social condition.
