China violence sparks protests in Azerbaijan
The recent outbreak of violence in China has caused
public discontent in Azerbaijan.
Some 50 activists of Musavat opposition party attempted to protest outside the Chinese embassy in Baku Tuesday in protest at the mass killings of Uighur Turks in China`s northwestern region of Xinjiang.
However, the police did not allow the unauthorized protest to go ahead. The law enforcers blocked the protesters` movement toward the embassy compound. The activists tried to forward a resolution to the diplomatic mission, but to no avail, and five of them were taken to a police precinct.
186 people were killed, more than 1,600 wounded and 1,000 detained during the riots, in Xinjiang`s worst ethnic violence in decades. Unofficial reports have put the death toll at over 500.
The clashes between the Uighurs and Han came after a protest against fatal attacks on Uighur workers at a factory in south China.
The World Azeris Congress (WAC), a group uniting Azeris around the globe, intends to follow with a picket outside the Chinese embassy on Wednesday. The WAC said the protesters will lay a black wreath in front of the building and submit a statement to the embassy.
"We can`t wage a war with China, can`t disrupt our relations with this country. But, if Uighurs there are being pressured just because they are Turks, and the world is failing to rise to their defense because they are Muslims, we have to voice our protest at that," said Sabir Rustamkhanly, a WAC co-chair.
Rustamkhanly noted that Chinese-made goods should be boycotted by consumers in Azerbaijan in light of the recent crackdown.
"Chinese goods, which are forged and of low quality anyway, are hurting our economy and paralyzing fields of the national economy that require growth. The delivery of those goods to the country should be prevented. Also, Chinese vendors who go door to door selling low quality commodities should be ousted from here."
