Baku not to limit ties with Tehran after US call
Azerbaijan has no intention to limit its economic relations with
Iran, an official said after a senior US official called on the
Islamic republic's partners to suspend trade ties with Tehran.
Assistant Secretary of State Nicholas Burns urged Iran's economic partners in Europe and Asia to cut off trade ties with Tehran in a statement issued in Paris last week.
"We have not received an official appeal about this from the United States," the Azerbaijan Foreign Ministry spokesman Khazar Ibrahim said. "We are familiar with the assistant secretary's calls, but there is currently no official letter to that end."
Ibrahim said that as a strategic partner of the U.S. and a friendly country of neighboring Iran, Baku backs a peaceful solution to the stand-off between the two countries.
"We don't want to see a new tide of tension in the region," Ibrahim added.
Western powers and Iran have been facing a long-standing dispute over Tehran's nuclear program. Iran insists its uranium enrichment activities are for civil use only and dismisses allegations that it is trying to build an atomic bomb.
