The presidential election is Azerbaijan’s internal affair, Russian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on February 8.
Zakharova was answering an Armenian journalist’s question whether moving the presidential election in Azerbaijan to an earlier date may slow down the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
"I think the presidential election is an internal affair of that sovereign country,” she said. “First of all, it is necessary to apply to the Azerbaijani side for comments about reasons and formats, and such comments have been made."
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed an order on Feb. 5 announcing early presidential election for April 11.
