Calls for banning Nurchu sect

13 May 2009 19:33 (UTC+04:00)
An Azerbaijani party leader is urging that the activity of the Nurchu sect in Azerbaijan, led by Turkish citizen Fatullah Gulen, should be outlawed.
The Nurcu movement is one of the well-known religious organizations in Turkey.
MP Gudrat Hasanguliyev, the chairman of the Whole Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, told a recent meeting of the parliament`s standing commissions that the state should not confine itself to fighting radical sects alone and should also campaign against such detrimental, but non-radical religions as Nurchu.
Hasanguliyev noted that the sect was not registered as a religious community and was mainly active in the Chag Oyretim Ishletmeleri school, trying to persuade children to enroll as students. "Since this is a boarding school, children stay there five days a week," he said.
The party chairman said, further, that the sect was providing children with religious and secular education at the same time, saying that only people combining both can become decent politicians. "They make fanatic calls and try to combine religion and politics, which contradicts our Constitution," he said.
The Nurchu denomination is known to have established a network of educational institutions throughout the world. Some Central Asian states have banned it, claiming it is religious propaganda.
