PACE head lauds referendum
Lluis Maria De Puig, president of the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), has highly praised the
March 18 referendum on constitutional changes held in
Azerbaijan.
"The conclusions made by international observers who monitored the referendum are grounds to say that the nationwide poll was held properly and in compliance with required standards," De Puig told the assembly`s spring session that started in Strasbourg, France on Monday.
He said that, according to the feedback from the Council of Europe, the OSCE and other organizations, while the election was not perfect, it is considered satisfactory.
"Certainly, shortfalls are reported in each election, and this is normal. But overall, it can be concluded that the outcome of the polling reflected the views of the citizens."
Azerbaijan is represented at the assembly by Samad Seyidov, head of the country`s delegation at PACE.
During the session, which is due to close on Thursday, participants are expected to hear a short report by Belgian MP Paul Wille, who is preparing a memorandum on the Azerbaijani referendum.
The nationwide poll covered a number of changes to the Constitution, including one on eliminating a two-term limit on the president, an issue that had long been in spotlight in the local and international community.
The session will focus on a wide range of issues, including presidential elections in Macedonia, parliamentary polls in Moldova and Montenegro and Georgia-Russia relations.
