Azeri leader warns of rampant crime in occupied territories
Trans-national crime, trafficking in humans and drugs and other grave crimes have assumed a wide scale in Azerbaijan`s territories under Armenian occupation, President Ilham Aliyev said in a letter to law enforcement chiefs of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member states.
In the message, addressed to the participants of a conference that started in Baku on Tuesday, the president indicated that those areas being uncontrolled had created conducive conditions for the perpetration of various crimes. This, he wrote, is a source of major threats not only for Azerbaijan but all regional countries.
Further, the letter says that such crimes as terrorism, separatism, proliferation of arms and narcotics imperil peaceful co-existence of countries, calling for their broad cooperation in countering such crimes.
The OIC Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs, Ezzat Kamel Mufti, said in his remarks that Islamic nations support Azerbaijan`s fair position on the Garabagh conflict.
"20 percent of Azerbaijan`s territories have been under Armenian occupation for 17 years. Over a million people have been evicted from their land. We support Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity," Mufty said.
The ICT official said Islam opposes violence and any crimes, stressing the importance of properly conveying a message to the world community that this religion favors peace and tolerance.
The two-day conference aims to outline key areas of collaboration among the law enforcers of the OIC states. Attendees are focusing on issues regarding joint combat against the above-mentioned crimes, as well as terror financing, corruption, illegal migration and legalization of unlawfully-acquired money or property, etc. Ways of fighting pervasive trans-national crime in the occupied Azerbaijani territories are in focus as well.
The Baku Declaration will be adopted at the end of the conference.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying part of Azerbaijan`s internationally-recognized territory since then.
