Leader reaffirms firm stance on Garabagh
President Ilham Aliyev has reaffirmed Azerbaijan`s
intransigent stance on the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh it faces with
Armenia.
"The Armenian side must know that Upper Garabagh will never be granted independence and the world community will never recognize its independence," Aliyev told a meeting of the Security Council on Monday.
Upper Garabagh is an Azerbaijani region occupied by the Armenian armed forces since a 1994 cease-fire ended hostilities that killed an estimated 30,000 people and ousted about a million Azerbaijanis out of their homes. The OSCE-brokered peace talks have been fruitless so far.
Aliyev said that, sooner or later, Yerevan will have to reckon with reality and the long-standing Garabagh problem will finally find its solution.
"We have been adhering to a constructive stance for 15 years since the cease-fire went into force. By constructively participating in peace talks, we are displaying our commitment to these talks. But the opposing side has to show constructivism as well. The Azerbaijani people and state will never reconcile with this occupation, policy of ethnic cleansing and the temporary loss of our lands," the president said.
Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan commands full grounds to free its territories, and international law endorses this right. "The decisions recently discussed and passed in international organizations, including the United Nations, once again indicate our just cause."
The UN has already passed five resolutions on the unconditional pullout of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories. Nonetheless, Yerevan is sticking to its policy of occupation and ignoring international law.
The Azerbaijani leader said the process of settling the Garabagh conflict as well as the developments ongoing the world over were being thoroughly tracked. The government of Azerbaijan, along with basing its policy on solid grounds, is ensuring its compliance with the changes taking place in the region, he added.
