Jailed presidential aide released
Azerbaijani former presidential aide Akif Muradverdiyev sentenced earlier to a jail term was released on Tuesday.
The Supreme Court cancelled the previous ruling handed down in March by the Court of Appeal, which upheld the six-year prison sentence of the Grave Crimes Court on charges of abuse of power and embezzlement. The former head of the affairs department of the presidential administration instead received a five-year suspended sentence.
The Court took into account the grave condition of Muradverdiyev who had been treated at a Justice Ministry hospital.
Muradverdiyev was one of the several senior officials arrested in the run-up to the November 2005 parliamentary elections on charges of a coup plot. Investigation into that case is under way and it will be reviewed separately.
