Local Russian-language news portal back on track
Azerbaijan`s most popular Russian-language online
news portal, Day.az, resumed its operation on Thursday after a
week-long suspension. Its English-language version, Today.az, is
back on track as well.
The two web-pages had been unavailable since February 18. The suspension of services was earlier reported to have been politically-motivated but later it became evident that Day.az had been sold to another founder.
The founder of the portal, MP Anar Mammadkhanly, has said the new owner is a non-governmental organization. He did not name the NGO but added that its leadership would elaborate, if necessary.
After Day.az published an interview with Boris Berezovsky, an oligarch living in Britain, which contained criticism of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, some maintained that it closed for political reasons. However, a senior official dismissed the reports regarding alleged pressure from Azerbaijani authorities.
