Scholars attend Libya event

17 January 2008 18:48 (UTC+04:00)
A three-day international conference on the "Academy of the Jamahiriya thought" was held in the Libyan capital Tripoli this week.
Scientists from Yemen, Serbia, Mauritania and Cameroon, as well as an Azerbaijani delegation led by Vilayat Jafar, head of the Arabic philology section of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, participated at the event.
The Azerbaijani delegation includes specialists on Arabic studies Laura Orujova and Amir Gasimly as well as editor-in-chief of the AzerNEWS weekly and General Director of the AssA-Irada news agency Fazil Abbasov.
Speaking at the conference, Jafar and Abbasov elaborated on the development of democracy in the East. They said Western countries often use democracy and human rights as a tool in their policy and approach Eastern countries with double standards.
The Azerbaijani scientists also accused some European countries of supporting Armenian invaders openly and covertly as well as Western politicians of turning a blind eye to the policy of ethnic cleansing pursued by Armenia in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and the deportation of a million Azerbaijanis from their homes.
The speakers emphasized that President Ilham Aliyev had repeatedly stated that not a single patch of Azerbaijani land would remain under occupation.
