Group of cross-border drug traffickers seized
Russian, Azerbaijani and Iranian law enforcers have detained a ring
of cross-border drug traffickers.
The group that was engaged in smuggling hash from Iran to Russia was seized in a joint operation, an official from the Russian federal drug enforcement service Aleksey Chuvayev said.
He said most of the narcotics were being taken to Russia's northwestern, central and southern regions.
Chuvayev said a truck loaded with apples contained 80 kg of hash. "The drugs were in polymeric packages and hidden in certain parts of the vehicle. Four members of the international criminal group were detained."
He said the detainees were ethnic Azeri citizens of Russia and citizens of Azerbaijan.
11 more people, including both individuals who were in charge of drug trafficking and petty traders, were arrested during an ensuing search.
Chuvayev said Iran's drug enforcement police have discovered an underground lab used for the production of drugs in the country.
Russian law enforcers traced the ring in September 2007 when a truck transporting some 50 kg of hash from Astrakhan to the Moscow region was detained.
The bulk of drugs impounded from the criminals could sell for $6,132,000 in the shadow market, Chuvayev said.
