Azerbaijan important for Eastern Partnership, says Lithuania
By Gunay Hasanova
Azerbaijan is an important country for the Eastern Partnership Program, said Kestutis Vaskelevicius, media advisor to the Lithuanian foreign minister.
“Lithuania’s position is that the support should be for all the Eastern Partnership countries and all Eastern Partnership countries are important,” Vaskelevicius, told Trend on November 4.
He noted that earlier some media outlets misquoted speech of Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius at the meeting of prime ministers of the Nordic and Baltic countries in Copenhagen on November 2, where he urged to continue support for the Eastern Partnership countries.
“The minister said that these countries should extend their support for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova and other Eastern Partnership countries,” added the media advisor.
The Eastern Partnership (EaP) is a joint initiative involving the EU, its member states, and 6 eastern European partners: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, the main aim of which is the development of integration ties of the EU with six post-Soviet countries.
Lithuania recognized Azerbaijan’s independence on December 21, 1991, while diplomatic relations between two countries were established on November 1992. Lithuanian embassy was opened in Azerbaijan in April 2007. The Embassy of Azerbaijan was opened in Lithuania in September 2007.
Both Azerbaijan and Lithuania are full members of the Council of Europe and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
