Protracted conflicts to be in focus of OSCE
Switzerland and Serbia will pay attention to protracted conflicts during the OSCE chairmanship, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland and Serbia, Didier Burkhalter and Ivan Mrkic said, speaking on Tuesday at a special meeting on the OSCE chairmanship in 2014- 2015 in Vienna.
"By accepting the presidency next year, we want to contribute to the establishment of security," Burkhalter said.
He stressed that the scope of priorities during the presidency also includes the improvement of dialogue in the South Caucasus.
According to Mrkic, Serbia is also ready to pay attention to many issues such as the resolution of protracted conflicts, new transnational threats and challenges, dialogue on arms control and cyber security.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
