April 2016 - victory that crossed out phenomenon of Armenian army’s invincibility

By Abdul Kerimkhanov

On April 2, 2016, the Azerbaijani army defeated the Armenian armed forces in the four-day war.

On the line of contact of the troops, where gunfights are observed almost daily, the largest battles took place in 25 years since the signing of the cease-fire agreement.

On the night of April 2, units of the Armenian armed forces suddenly subjected to intense shelling of Azerbaijani positions along the entire front line from large-caliber machine guns, mortars, grenade launchers, artillery mounts, and using ammunition prohibited by international conventions.

In addition, the Armenian forces shelled the settlements located near the contact line.

As a result, for the suppression of hostile actions, the leadership of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces made a decision on urgent response measures.

Azerbaijani forces broke through the first line of defence of the Armenian Armed Forces and established control over some strategic heights and populated areas. Due to the timely assessment of the situation, the Azerbaijani military was able to completely clear the hostile from the height around the village of Talysh, which could pose a threat to the Geranboy region and the city of Naftalan, as well as the settlement Seysulan.

Also, in order to ensure the security of Horadiz city, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces’ units took control of the Leletepe Upland, located in the direction of the Fizuli region. This point allows to keep under control a vast territory.

The Armenian command and headquarters, located in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, was defeated by the exact response fire of the Azerbaijani troops. As a result of the strike, a large number of enemy soldiers, including officers in the rank of colonel and general, were destroyed.

During the four-day war, as many as 2,000 hectares of territory were liberated from the Armenian occupation. The strategic heights from which most of the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh can be controlled passed under the control of the Azerbaijani army.

After the battles on the line of contact on April 2–5, the situation on the front line changed radically: in contrast to all previous years, the advantage is now on the Azerbaijani side, which can control front-line territories from liberated heights.

Azerbaijan did not set targets for a large-scale offensive against the Armenian troops. It was about a counterattack since the first shots and artillery cannonade began from the Armenian side. The Azerbaijani army, taking advantage of the hostile’s regular treacherous action, merely conducted reconnaissance by force.

The new tactical weapon used by the Azerbaijani army horrified the Armenian command, which did not hide its indignation and claims against the countries that supplied Azerbaijan with the most up-to-date armament.

During the battles, the Armenian troops, retreating in panic, left documents, communications equipment and other ammunition on the battlefield, as well as weapons, ammunition and night vision devices.

Azerbaijan has managed to achieve a solution to a serious task. The Karabakh conflict, which world politicians rarely mentioned in their regular speeches, has now been spoken to by the whole world. Nagorno-Karabakh is no longer a preserved conflict, and the entire world community has understood that it cannot be delayed with its decision.

These four days became the starting point of the new history and evidence for all those who did not believe in the very possibility of a big battle. The Azerbaijani army violated the myth of the invincibility of the Armenian army and withstood the new history exam.
