One of the most important issues for Azerbaijan at the recent trilateral meeting of the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia was the exchange of views on the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and, most importantly, the reflection of this issue in the final declaration.

Azerbaijani MP Hikmat Babaoglu made the remarks in his interview to Trend on November 2.

The declaration reads that the unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh problem is an obstacle to regional integration, and stresses that the problem should be resolved on the basis of international-level decisions taken to this day.

“This is an extremely important detail, as the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council call for the withdrawal of Armenian occupation forces from the territory of Azerbaijan,” Babaoglu said.

Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Hassan Rouhani of Iran met in Tehran on November 1 in order to further strengthen the Baku-Moscow-Tehran format. The heads of state discussed political, economic, transport and humanitarian issues, fight against terrorism and drug trafficking, as well as exchanged views on regional issues and mutual cooperation.

“The trilateral meeting of the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran was very important for resolving the issues of the region’s further development and ensuring its security,” Babaoglu said.

The MP added that the idea of the new trilateral format belongs to Azerbaijan, and Azerbaijan-Russia-Iran is the second such format of cooperation and partnership after the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey format.

The first tripartite meeting of the three countries presidents was held in Azerbaijan in August last year. At the time, the heads of state concluded their assembly by adopting a declaration affirming their intent to develop trilateral cooperation. The third such meeting will be held in Russia.
