The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the internal affair of Azerbaijan, said Indonesian Ambassador to Baku Husnan Bey Fananie, noting that Azerbaijan should liberate its lands from the occupation at any cost.

"We have always supported the path of peace. We were expressing support for Azerbaijan in the Karabakh issue in international organizations, and we will keep doing this," Fananie told reporters during his visit to Guba, APA reported on May 3.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions calling for immediate and unconditional withdrawal.

Speaking about the prospects of economic cooperation between the two countries, Fananie stressed the great potential for deepening cooperation.

Fananie said that from time to time he is being informed about the investment Indonesian businessmen do in Azerbaijan.

Indonesia recognized Azerbaijan’s independence on December 28, 1991. Bilateral relations between the two republics were established on September 24, 1992. The embassy of Azerbaijan in Indonesia was established in 2006, while the embassy of Indonesia in Azerbaijan was opened in 2010.
