Absheron is one of the largest industrial and agricultural regions of Azerbaijan. Although it shares the same name as the Absheron Peninsula, the area covered by the district is not conterminous, being further west and mostly inland. Here agricultural production develops in two directions, inclduing plant growing and cattle breeding.

Founded in 1963, Absheron has lots of historical monuments dating back to the 18th-19th centuries. The region’s famous religious monuments are Abdurrahman mosque pertaining to the 19th century and built by villager Haji Gurban in Goradile village and mosque-madrasa built by Haji Safarali in Novxani, as well as Albattin mosque in Fatmai related to the 18th century.

Aside from religious monuments, there are many monuments pertaining to social life of people in last centuries, for example, hamams built in Middle Ages by Haji Kazim in Qobu village and another one built by Meshadi Imam Baxish in Khirdalan.

Washed by Caspian Sea, Absheron is especially famous for its sandy beaches and numerous suburban settlements. The region is a favorite place of metropolitan residents in spring-summer season.
