Turkish coffee was included in UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The decision was made during the 8th Session of UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Baku on December 2-7.
Referring to the decision, Chairman of the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO Prof. Ocal Oguz said Turkish coffee is more than just a drink, adding that "known for its history, taste and influence for many generations, Turkish coffee has a unique value and is worthy of being included in the list of Intangible Heritage by UNESCO.'
"We are going to submit the ancient traditional technique of drawing on water, i.e., ebru, as the next candidate for the list," Oguz added.
Turkish coffee, famed for the way it is made, is prepared in 'cezve', a small coffee pot with a long handle which is particularly useful to avoid burning one's hands and a brim that is designed for serving the coffee.
Ottomans always brewed coffee on fire, and its temperature was controlled by moving cezve over the fire or moving it away on hot sands.
Turkish coffee is served in small cups while it is very hot. A cup of cold water and sweet are served with the coffee, and pistachios are added to the finished beverage in some regions.
The UNESCO World Heritage List currently includes 981 protected objects and cultural values of 160 countries.
The list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Turkey includes mesir macunu (spicy, sweet paste), keşkek (braised wheat and tender meat), semah (ritual dance performed by dervishes), and Karagöz and Hacivat (the main characters in the traditional Turkish shadow puppet theater).
Earlier, Azerbaijani game "Chovgan", which is played while riding Karabakh horses, and the ancient Georgian traditional method of wine-making in large clay containers (kvevri) were included in UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
