Baku hosts event on rich Indian culture

By Nigar Orujova

Azerbaijani capital Baku hosted an event dedicated to the abundant culture of India last week. The gala event, organized by the local public association Ireli, was a magic gift to lovers of the Indian culture.

Visitors were delighted with an interesting program, which reflected the history of Indian people, national cuisine, music, costumes and wedding customs.

Indian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vinod Kumar praised the event, and also noted the developing relations between the two countries.

Ireli chairman Rauf Mardiyev, for his part, emphasized the friendly relations between Azerbaijan and India. He said such projects were being held in cooperation with the Indian embassy and will be implemented in the future as well.

"This is a very important project for the nations to better know each other's history and culture," Mardiyev said. "That is why we will further expand it with other diplomatic missions in the country."

The Azerbaijani-Indian relations have deep historical roots. Interaction throughout ages has contributed to the cultural enrichment of both countries.

The Great Silk Road connected Azerbaijan and India from time immemorial. Indian worshipers were fond of the temple of fireworshipers Ateshgah in Baku since ancient times.

India recognized Azerbaijan's independence in December 1991 and diplomatic relations were established on February 28, 1992.

Azerbaijan celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2012.
