Visitors to pay for entry to ancient village
BAKU – Visitors will have to pay for entry to an ancient village in Azerbaijan’s northern Guba region.
The decision to charge tourists money for entering the Khinalig village has been passed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The small fee will be charged beginning next year, according to the Khinalig Preserve of History, Architecture and Ethnography.
The unique mountainous village is located 2,300 meters above sea level and has 160 historical houses and a population of 2,100 people. Restoration work is underway there while maintaining its ancient appearance.
The culture ministry is also conducting archaeological excavations in Khinalig. An ancient residential area and a burial mound have been discovered there. The finds date back to the Bronze Age, i.e. 3rd and 2nd millennia B.C.E, says archeologist Idris Aliyev, who is working in the village.
There are up to 15 caves in the burial mound area where ancient people supposedly lived. Archaeological excavations will be carried out at the caves soon.
