Azeri cartoonist gets UN excellence award
BAKU – The United Nations has awarded well-known Azerbaijani cartoonist Seyran Jafarli in an international contest. The "Citations for excellence" at the Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award, granted for Jafarli’s Hegiget Jarchisi (Herald of Truth) painting, is the artist’s 90th award.
The annual awards, named after an American Israeli editorial cartoonist, were created in 2000 to recognize cartoons that "enhance, explain and help direct the spirit and principles of the UN." The awards are worth a total of $18,000.
Dr. Elie Wiesel, a Nobel laureate, chaired the Judging Committee that evaluated the bidders.
