European film festival draws 2,000 viewers in Baku

BAKU – Over 2,000 viewers have been attracted to the week-long European Movie Festival launched in Baku last Friday by the European Union’s Delegation to Azerbaijan.

The festival continues with six best European movies that were recognized by numerous national and international awards.

On Tuesday the festival day was opened by an Oscar winning Austrian movie "The Counterfeiters", which is a true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936.

The second movie presented was a Hungarian movie "Bridgeman" about the life of a Hungarian aristocrat of the 19th century, who financed the building of the first permanent bridge over the Danube in Budapest in 1839.

On Wednesday, the Polish movie to be screened is "Time to die". Aniela is as much a sprightly, unyielding relic of the past as the big dacha-style house surrounded by tall trees in which she lives alone with her impetuous dog... The festival day will continue with Dutch movie "Duska" by a legendary director Jos Stelling. It is a film about an aging screenwriter who lives a bachelor's life spending most of his time in cinema hoping to attract attention of the beautiful ticket attendant and when finally he manages that, the arrival of Duska spoils everything.

On the last day, Thursday, the film lovers will enjoy the UK movie "Age of Stupid". This ambitious documentary drama from an Oscar-winning Producer John Battsek features Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055. He watches 'archive' footage from 2008 and asks: Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?...

The festival will be closed by the German movie, winner of many German and international awards "Four minutes". Schubert, Mozart, Chopin and a bunch of killers. That's a life for 80-year-old piano teacher at the women's prison….. With her help an inmate Jenny wins a prestigious piano contest. But the contest is not a challenge to those who want their lives to stand still.

Film sessions start at 18.00 and 20.00. Entrance is free for everybody. The festival takes place in Rotunda Room at the Landmark Business Center.

The festival is organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan and Embassies of the EU member-states represented in the country.
