Azeri attending New York music school
A graduate of the Baku Music Academy is studying at
the New York Conservatory. Turker Gasymzada, 21, is the first
Azerbaijani to have been admitted to this school, which is renowned
throughout the world.
Gasymzada, a composer, is the grandson of Gasym Gasymzada, the famed Azerbaijani poet. Turker Gasymzada has already drawn attention to his works, composed in the classical style. This past June a concert, composed by Gasymzada, was held at the US embassy in Baku and sponsored by former ambassador Anne Derse. During the event, which featured compositions of various genres, Derse described Gasymzada as the ``bright future of Azerbaijan`s classical music.``
Gasymzada`s works have drawn interest abroad, as well. His new composition, called ``(MI)niature``, was played at the New York Conservatory last week.
Gasymzada, who faced problems with financing his education in the United States, requested assistance from the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, which is implementing a number of cultural projects in Azerbaijan. The organization, headed by First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, has provided assistance in paying Gasymzada`s tuition fees.
``In the U.S. I plan both to be worthy to represent my homeland, Azerbaijan, and to increase my professionalism by taking advantage of the world musical culture,`` Gasymzada said.
