Azeri artist gets top French award
Outstanding Azerbaijani artist Tahir Salakhov has
been conferred with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of
Arts and Letters), one of France`s top awards.
The award, granted in the Officier (officer) grade, was presented to him last Wednesday by the Secretary of the country`s Academy of Fine Arts, Arnaud d`Hauteries, in a ceremony organized with the support of Azerbaijan`s permanent representative in UNESCO, Eleonora Huseynova. The event was attended by Tarik Aliyev, the Azerbaijani Ambassador in Paris, and world-famous fashion designer Pierre Cardin.
Cardin said in his remarks that he has known Salakhov for a long time and appreciated his talent. "Tahir Salakhov`s creative work could be compared to an unreachable pinnacle."
Salakhov, a prominent artist with a remarkable track record dating back to Soviet times and vice-president of Russia`s Academy of Arts, highly praised the French award, saying he was touched by the honor.
"If an award touches your heart, this means it`s a tribute to your hard work," he said. "This is great happiness for me that my creative work is highly valued not only in my dearest homeland, Azerbaijan, but also in France. I would like to say `thank you` to Azerbaijan, and to France, for this high award."
The Order of Arts and Letters, established in 1957 by the Minister of Culture, is granted to recognize significant contributions to arts and literature.
