The round table "Textile collections in museums" has kicked off in Baku.

The event was dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijani Carpet Museum and the 110th anniversary of the birth of Latif Karimov, the founder of the museum, an outstanding scientist and carpet artist, Trend Life reported.

In her speech, museum's director Shirin Melikova spoke about the activities of the institution over the recent period, implemented projects, as well as the work to promote Azerbaijani carpet art.

Melikova stressed that over the past two years, the museum received carpets, national clothes, jewelry and various items found during archaeological excavations.

Museum's director said that the round table will discuss such topics as conservation and restoration of carpets, carpets, national clothes, fabrics, their preservation and exhibition.

Issues related to establishing ties with textile museums, associations and communities in different countries, exchange of experience, holding scientific conferences on textile collections, exhibitions, seminars, master classes, etc. will also considered.

The head of the Cultural Institutions and Folk Art Department at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Fikret Babayev spoke about the attention and concern of the state about museum institutions. He informed the audience about the implemented projects aimed at the development of the museum business.

Azerbaijani carpet art has an ancient history. They are known at international level, saved and stored at the world museums and private collections. Thanks to the care of the country, on November 10, 2010, the Azerbaijani carpet art was included into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

Azerbaijan's Carpet Museum established in Baku in 1967, being the first carpet museum in the world is the very place that can familiarize all the interested with the unique examples of the national carpets.

The main purpose of the creation of the museum was to store, research, and demonstrate unique examples of the carpet weaving art, which are the Azerbaijan’s national heritage. The initiator of the museum was Latif Karimov – an outstanding scientist and carpet weaver, the founder of the science of Azerbaijan Carpet Weaving Art, artist and teacher, author of the fundamental work Azerbaijani carpet.

In 2007, the President Ilham Aliyev, signed a decree for the creation of a new building for the museum in the territory of Seaside National Park.

A new carpet museum, designed in the form of a rolled carpet, opened in the Baku Seaside Park in 2014 and all carpets were transferred to this museum.

Today museum hosts many events, such as exhibitions, international symposiums, and conferences, are held.

During its 50 years of existence, the museum has organized more than 30 exhibitions in different countries throughout the world

Azerbaijan's Carpet Museum operates as the site for the comprehensive research of traditional carpet weaving art and its popularization within world culture.
