Walled City to be taken off UNESCO endangered monuments list
Baku`s Walled City is to be taken off UNESCO`s list
of endangered monuments. Experts monitoring the area have said the
action follows the systematic restoration work that has been
carried out in the old city.
UNESCO expert Carlo Cesari said the results of the monitoring would soon be submitted to the organization and added that the new Master Plan of the Walled City has impressed the monitoring group.
In December 2000, the Inner City (Icheri Sheher) with the Palace of the Shirvanshahs and Maiden Tower became the first location in Azerbaijan classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. But three years later, UNESCO placed the old city on the List of World Heritage in Danger, citing damage from a November 2000 earthquake, poor conservation as well as "dubious" restoration efforts.
It is widely believed that the Walled City, as well as the Maiden`s Tower inside it, were already built in the twelfth century, however, according to some researchers, construction may date back as early as the 7th century.
