Ferrosilicon and ferrosilicon manganese (FeSiMn) will be produced at Azerbaijan's Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park (SCIP) starting from the second half of 2017, the Economy Ministry reported on June 13.

Construction of a relevant plant has already begun by the Baku Non-Ferrous Metals & Ferroalloys Company, said the ministry.

The plant is planned to produce 20,000 tons of ferrosilicon and 36,000 tons of ferrosilicon manganese a year. The plant will employ 150 people.

The products manufactured in the plant will not only meet the domestic demand but also be exported.

The main components of ferrosilicon and ferroalloys are iron and silicon. Ferrosilicon is used as deoxidizing and alloying additives for electric smelting, spring, corrosive and heat-resistant steels.

Meanwhile, the FeSiMn- brittle alloy of iron, silicon and manganese- serves as a steel deoxidizer in metallurgy. It makes the alloy shock resistant and hardenable.

President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree to create the Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park in December 2011.

Azerbaijan’s state owned oil company SOCAR was instructed by this decree together with the Ministry of Economy and Industry to jointly implement the measures supporting the establishment and development of production and processing divisions that related to the field of chemical industry in the territory of the SCIP.

The Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park aims to stimulate development of the non-oil sector in Azerbaijan via increasing the capacity of the country’s chemical industry, establishing private enterprises in this field, producing competitive products from local raw materials and creating a base for the development of science and technology in the mentioned field.

It is planned to place 35-40 enterprises in the territory of SCIP, which envisages creating 10,000 new jobs.

To date, seven residents were registered to function in the territory of the Sumgait Chemical Industrial Park, which are Azertexnolayn, SOCAR Polymer, Azerfloat, Azerbaijan Fibro Cement, SIKA, Baku Non-Ferrous Metals & Ferroalloys Company and MST Engineering.

The territory of Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park will be divided into two parts - the administrative-social and industrial zones.

The residents of the industrial park have been exempted from income, land and property taxes for next seven years in order to increase the attractiveness of the park for the investors. Additionally, imported equipment and technologies that is meant to be used in the territory of the park are also free from value added tax (VAT).
