The state of Azerbaijan is currently makes huge efforts to facilitate cargo transportation through the territory of the country.

A presidential decree signed on May 26 on the changes to the Tax Code is also aimed at the further development in this sphere.

Under the amendments, load carriers and vehicles with trailer or semi-trailer registered in the foreign countries are free of highway-user tax for the 3 year period.

The changes envisage that the tax exemption is applied should the freight is unloaded to the vehicle registered in the foreign country at the territory of Azerbaijan and directed to the nearest customs border enter point or the cargo is brought in to the territory of the country by means of the vehicles registered abroad through the nearest border enter point.

The Cabinet of Ministers was tasked to define the rules referring to the changes within the period of two months.

The changes are expected to increase cargo transportation through the territory of the country. The measures taken by the government are considered to be an important step for creating conditions for the expansion of cooperation opportunities in the field of transport, increasing the volumes of transit cargo as well as gaining more revenues from the sector.

Declines in energy prices have given new impetus to Azerbaijan’s long-running quest to diversify its economy and develop the domestic non-oil sector. In this regard, the country’s leadership has placed particular importance on the transport sector.

The state has focused on gaining profit from its favorable geographic location between East and West through developing transportation potential.
