Azerbaijan has introduced a temporary restriction on the import of livestock and livestock products from Iran in connection with the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
The latest outbreak was recorded in the Iranian province of Qom, by the World Organization for Animal Health. As of January 8, some 15 cases out of a total of 1250 cattle were revealed, and two of these animals died in Qom.
“The import of animals and animal products from the provinces of Qom, Arak, Kashan and Tehran were temporarily restricted,” the State Service of Veterinary Supervision under the Agriculture Ministry reported.
The import of other goods, controlled by the state veterinary will be allowed if the certificate is available.
The situation with foot and mouth disease and other infectious diseases in Azerbaijan is stable, the Agriculture Ministry reported. All the relevant agencies take the necessary measures to protect Azerbaijan from the disease.
Foot and mouth disease is a highly contagious viral vesicular disease of cloven-hoofed animals. Although seldom lethal in adult animals, it causes serious production losses and is a major constraint to international trade in livestock products.
