Azeris still facing rights violations in foreign firms
The establishment of trade unions in trans-national companies
operating in Azerbaijan is being delayed, said participants at a
seminar on relevant issues held in Baku on Tuesday.
The attendees noted that unlike the time when foreign companies were starting their activity in the country, they currently reckon with such entities, although these practices are not applied in all companies.
Sten Petersen, Moscow Senior Specialist of the International Labor Organization on Workers` Activities, says foreign companies working in Azerbaijan are violating the rights of local employees by committing discrimination. Petersen said one of the biggest problems was Azerbaijani employees` receiving lower salaries, in comparison with their foreign counterparts. "Every employee should be paid their dues, regardless of nationality, for his or her creative work and labor," he said.
Azerbaijani experts also suggest that the rights of local workers are, at times, infringed upon and the wages in foreign companies are not distributed fairly, which is often due to the sluggish activity of trade unions.
