Azerbaijan, Iran mull round-the-clock border checkpoint operation
Azerbaijani and Iranian customs officials have discussed a shift
to a 24 hour operation regime at border checkpoints between the two
countries.
Iran`s delegation was led by head of the Bilasuvar Customs Office
Siyavush Suri, while Azerbaijan`s delegation was led by head of
Bilasuvar customs department of the State Customs Committee Sahib
Akhundov, AzerTag state news agency reported.
Suri said that the work to ensure a shift to a round-the-clock
operation of border checkpoints is nearing its completion.
Akhundov hailed “historical and cultural” ties between the two
countries, saying they enjoy good economic and trade
cooperation.
The parties also discussed ways of overcoming the difficulties
related to the movement of persons at checkpoints.
Recently, the relations between Azerbaijan and Iran, two neighboring countries with a long history of bilateral ties and cooperation, have risen to a higher level.
Tehran has in recent years focused seriously on development of ties with neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan which enjoys various commonalties with Iran in religious, historical and cultural fields.
The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Iran stood at $144.045 million in January-September 2014, according to the State Customs Committee (SCC) of Azerbaijan.
In the past nine months, goods worth $115.6 million were imported to Azerbaijan, and the goods exported by the country amounted to $28.45 million.
