Azerbaijan sets minimum national requirements for hotels

The Azerbaijani State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patent has set minimum requirements for hotels and hotel- type facilities.

The new national AZS 755-2014 standard was adopted to improve the quality of services rendered for tourists, provision of security and competence of the hotels and hotel-type facilities personnel, according to the committee.

This standard included types of accommodation, rules for organization of the system for assessment of hotels and other accommodation facilities conformity with minimum requirements, as well as conducting audits at these facilities.

Earlier, Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Ministry has announced that only 48 hotels and hotel-type facilities in the country with 516 hotels and hotel-type facilities passed state classification and operate in accordance with the relevant category of stars.

Some 19 hotels have five stars, 22 hotels are four stars hotels, five hotels - three stars, and two hotels have two stars, the ministry said. The capital city Baku has some 15 hotels with 5 stars as well as 12 hotels with 4 stars and four hotels with 3 stars. The hotels of the 2 stars category are located in regions.

The "star rating" is valid for three years in Azerbaijan, and the validity of the rating of most hotels that passed the state classification expired in December 2013 and will end in January 2014.

Currently, the ministry is reviewing applications submitted for reassignment of classification to these hotels.
