There are around 15,000 hotel rooms in Baku that fully meet visitor requirements, Azerbaijani Minister of Culture and Tourism said on October 31.

Abulfaz Garayev said around 6,000 out of 15,000 rooms belong to hotels with maximum number of stars, while 9,000 rooms belong to hotels that have the minimum number of stars.

"We are interested in more three-star hotels in the country," he said. "Work is underway in this regard."

The number of hotels in Azerbaijan has been on the rise, but only 260 of the 514 operating hotels have obtained licenses.

Some 221 licensed travel agencies also operate in the country.

Prices of local tourism facilities were reduced by 20 percent in 2012, but in some facilities they still remain high. However, the trend of price reduction in Azerbaijan's tourism facilities is expected to continue, the ministry said.

There is currently an influx of tourists to Azerbaijan. The number of foreign nationals who visited Azerbaijan in the first half of 2013 increased by 9.9 percent compared to the same period in 2012.

Up to 95 percent of the tourists come to Azerbaijan through the aid of travel agencies.

Most of the foreigners are citizens of Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Iran, and European countries.
