Azerbaijan may purchase railway carriages from Swiss firm

Azerbaijani Railways is considering proposals of Swiss company Stadler Rail on the purchase of passenger carriages, sposekeman Nadir Azmamedov told Trend news agency.

Stadler Rail is a producer of rail and special carriages, trams and shunting locomotives. The company has plants in Switzerland, Germany, Poland and other countries. Its rolling stock is used in 13 world countries.

Azmamedov said the transition of railway track in Azerbaijan and Georgia to a narrower one through Turkey according to European standards has to be provided for the launch of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line.

"The carriages will have a suitable mechanism which will enable this kind of changeover to take place," Azmamedov noted.

"Freight carriages also have to be purchased for the new railway line, but exceptional passenger carriages are going to be purchased from the Swiss company," Azmamedov noted.

Baku-Tbilisi-Kars will enable the flow of container, liquid and other types of freight from Asia to Europe. The realization of the Marmaris project on construction of a tunnel beneath the Bosporus will enable the launch of transportation to Europe.
