New facility to improve Absheron power supply

Construction of a second power generating facility at the Shimal power station, located in a suburb of the Azerbaijani capital Baku, is on schedule, the state-owned power production and distribution company Azerenerji said in a report.

The purpose of the construction operations is to provide power supplies to the Absheron Peninsula, which encompasses the Azerbaijani capital and its surrounding regions, and to the power grid in general.

The report says the construction work is on schedule, and the building of new electricity transmission lines and substations will be completed by the end of this year.

According to a contract signed with Japanese firm Toyo Engineering, it was decided to launch the construction of a second power generating facility, with 400 megawatt capacity. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in September last year.

A new, 22 kilowatt electricity transmission line and a number of substations will be constructed within the project.

The total capacity of Azerenerji's power stations exceeds 6,000 megawatts. Over 200 substations with the capacity of 500, 330, 220 and 110 KWt as well as six hydropower plants and 13 thermal power plants are owned by the company.
