Foreign tourists spent over $1bn in Azerbaijan in 2011
Foreign tourists spent 966.3 million manats (around $1.23 billion) in Azerbaijan in 2011, 26 percent over 2010, a tourism ministry official has said.
Aydin Ismiyev told a meeting on the outcomes of the Year of Tourism Wednesday that 2,239,000 foreign nationals, including over 1,800,000 tourists, visited the country last year.
Ismiyev also said the number of hotels operating in the country increased to 515 from 499 in 2010. 45 more hotels are currently under construction.
178 travel agencies are operating in the South Caucasus republic, he added.
