Baku subway fare up

The subway fare in the Azerbaijani capital Baku will be raised to 20 Gapiks (25 cents) from the current 15 Gapiks from December 1, according to a decision of the country’s body in charge of pricing.

The Tariff Council said that by 2030 the number of subway stations will be increased and the length of rail lines extended, in accordance with the Perspective Development Plan of the Baku Subway. Since the Plan envisions renewal of the railway carriage depot and commissioning of new subway stations, the Council decided to raise the fare to cover the costs.

The Council said that despite the increase, transportation costs per passenger are still many times higher than the new fare.

It also noted that the new fare is significantly lower than those charged in a number of CIS and neighboring countries. Thus, the fare is 71 Gapiks in Moscow, 63 Gapiks in St. Petersburg, 38 Gapiks in Kazan, 74 Gapiks in Istanbul, and 20 Gapiks in Kyiv and Tbilisi.
